Mankoff loves to cycle. He, kind of, has a dog named Gretta. He loves to cook, and especially loves to eat. When life gets him down, he usually stays depressed about it for a short period of time, and then goes for a bike ride … all of which has no real influence on his art. J.R. graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art.. From there, he began his career creating light for David LaChapelle, Norman Jean Roy, and a slew of editorial and fine art photographers. Mankoff Age: 30 Website: www.jrmankoff.com Medium: Photography, Light, Mixed-media Location: Los Angeles Influences: John Baldessari, Franz Kline, David LaChapelle, women, Nick Knight, Wong Kar Wai, Norman Jean Roy, art blogs, my friends, science, psychology, fear and rules Education: BFA - Michigan State University • • • EH: The pairing of movement you've created around your polaroids are quite enchanting. To some, perhaps a vibrant dance via erotica. To others, a series of carnal movements that are quite fitting in differing, graceful poses. In some medium, the series follows a doctrine of completing a figure outside it's original form. There is something quite fascinating about forming the anatomy of a human using different frames in time, also, the greater part of your series- using a nondescript bit of the body, and completing it's form with your pencil. What draws you to this abstract form of completion? JRM: I've always had a fascination with movement and eroticism. Yet, when studying the female form, I've always wanted to bring a bit of elegance to my work. Through these notions, I wanted to study the body in a more unique and challenging form … more challenging than the harsh reality of a captured image through the lens. Against my norm, I rarely looked through the lens when I took these images. I wanted to capture parts of the body that were abstracted and unconventional framing for a camera. I questioned and doubted myself when I pasted the polaroid on the paper for the first time. It was only then, as I started my first few pencil strokes, did i come to realize what the final image might look like. The polaroid and the paper dictated the anatomy, and my pencil seemed to follow a predetermined direction. EH: What emotion best describes where you derive your inspiration- how do you react to it? JRM: Love and anticipation I think. Thats two, I know … Much of my work revolves around discovery and my interpretation in the reflection of a subject's self. I love my subjects for who they are, no matter how light or dark their demons may be. The deeper I can explore that, the more exciting the work can become. EH: A Rembrandt piece is surely art, though it looks nothing like Warhol's Campbell's Soup piece- which is also considered art. The broad description of art allows us to speak about it in the way we do. In this modern age do you see the necessity to define art, and why? JRM: It's human nature to try to understand something and title it. Religion does a wonderful job with this. Different art movements categorize its journey throughout history; when I start to look at the contemporary art movement, I find it hard to define. At times it can be quite beautiful and engaging, while other art is created with what seems to have no deeper purpose beyond its own aesthetics. I then look at its audience and start to ask many more questions. More people need to start asking why instead of following. As long as art has purpose and value in its expression, I do not care if it is defined. It is art. EH: Delineate your creative process. JRM: It varies. It's more like cooking than baking to me. I get all the basic ingredients together, and once the process starts, I have to feel, taste, touch, love, screw up and make corrections. Sometimes I'll just throw it all away to start over again. Every time it's a little different … even if I'm making the same meal. EH: What is your most prodigious ambition as an artist? JRM: I hope I never find what I'm looking for so that I continue to love searching for it. EH: Your creative repertoire varies from captivating portraits, light direction for performance pieces, fashion spreads, to special projects. As an artist, do you find it imperative to hone a gift in one medium- or is art to you, exploring all mediums and crafting them to your own? Explain. JRM: I'm constantly inspired by so many forms of art. The expression and the curiosity of my current emotion state excites me. The journey is part of the enjoyment in my art and I find that every time I try something new, I learn. Along the way I may fall in love with a new form to express my thoughts. I think it is important not to limit myself as just a "photographer". You could say I am trying to "hone a gift" on not one medium, but the expression of my senses. EH: Dinner time! Tonight you're preparing a dish of collaborators for the inspirational palette. Which figures (in history) are the ingredients, and what will you be creating together tonight? JRM: I am trying to stop Christopher Doyel from getting Mario Batali drunk, but Mario keeps trying to steal Brigitte Bardot's attention away from Serge Gainsbourg. Alton Brown is trying to make some hors' doeuvres, but Nietzsche keeps interrupting him to discuss the existential truth of why we eat. Donovan keeps trying to feed electric banana peels to David LaChapelle, while David watches Guy Bourdin take pictures of a pair of shoes Van Gogh has been obsessing over. Meanwhile, John Baldessari and I are discussing spontaneous creativity until Hunter S. Thompson interrupts and apologizes for being early, or late … though he's really not quite sure how he got here and randomly asks the man to his left, Quentin Tarantino, if guns make him uncomfortable. I'd love to explain what we are creating further, but Robert Longo keeps hurling rocks at me to see how I will move and Matthew Barney volunteered to be our spokesperson, so you are out of luck. EH: What new projects are your currently working on? JRM: I'm currently exploring people through a process in which I ask them to create art for me… flight attendants, strippers, celebrities and so on… lets leave it at that for now. EH: Any last words? JRM: I hate saying goodbye to a favorite pair of socks. I always thought it would be wonderful if someone would teach a history class through the study of art. MANKOFF SEX ON A STRING was a site-specific danced based project that escaped the predictability of performance and performance space. By incorporating light into these spaces, J.R. Mankoff, in collaboration with Ryan Heffington (director/choreographer), was able to transform dance from theaters into homes, parks and the Streets of Los Angeles.
